Metzo Violin
This violin is one of the youngest in this collection. It is dated 1942 and is made of good Canadian maple and spruce. Inside the violin is a label "METZO VIOLIN Made in Toronto 1942". To the right is a circle with G..H..C inside of it.
The violin came to us in very good shape and our luthiery cleaned it up and polished it. He refit the pegs, put in a new sound post, chin rest, bridge, tail piece and tail hanger. The strings were okay.
This is an affordable student violin that is like new. It can be a nice collectable for those who are shopping for a small piece Canadian history.
Here is a note from another owner of a Metzo violin. She followed up on the history of this violin and here is her report.
"I did find the company that made those violins (it was on the sticker inside the violin, but I didn't see it at first). G.H.C.,Geo.Heinl & Co. Ltd, a company on Church St. in Toronto. I did speak to someone who provided some history from the time the Metzos were made. Here is a little of what he told me : He said those violins were known as "the War Time" violins. They were made during the 2nd World War, and the date on my violin must have been 1944, not 1914. He said that they were not worth a lot of money, because the company was just trying to stay afloat in difficult financial times-- it would have been made in a 'factory' with 5 or 6 guys all working together, each making a different part and then someone would glue the parts together. He said they made the violins just so that people could afford to buy one. They would have been bought as a "student violin".
And it is still a good student violin today
