Wolff Bros 1888 Violin - For Sale

Submitted by admin on Sat, 02/09/2008 - 19:23.

Inside of the violin is the original label. It reads:

WOLFF BROs..

VIOLIN MANUFACURERS.

No. 540 1888

In the bottom of the border of the label is inserted:

"made abroad".

Wolff Bros were a prolific violin manufacturer at the end of the 19th century. To produce a violin No. 540 was rather extraordinary at the time. Full factory manufacturing for violins was still a very young industry at that time. These first factories were not like the mechanized wonders of today that pump out the wheezing and screeching plastic violins that are the bain of music teachers worldwide. These were factories set up where a man just did one part of the violin all day and then the parts were assembled at the end of the line. It was still slow and there was very little mechanization involved. It was all very new so the most extraordinary thing was that they produced such high quality violins in these new factory processes of the time. They were manufactured in Germany and the market for them was in England. That may explain why it is stated that they were "made abroad".

You can see the beautiful maple grain in the wood on the back and sides. Note the symmetry in the grain as it goes around the sides and back of the violin. It continues as a full and beautiful tiger grain in the neck and scroll of the violin.

There are several other special features in the finish of this violin. There is the black outline of the scroll and on the edges on the side of the violin at the F hole area. The perfluing is straight with nice and consistent bee stings in the corners.

Not only is there value in the presentation of this violin, there is value in its construction. The wood is not only beautiful, the spruce on the top adds to the resonance and fullness of the sound. Inside there are strips of bracing wood around the inside edge of the violin that come flush to the top and bottom. The blocks are of better quality wood and set in more firmly. It shows quality wood and workmanship.

There was a great deal of work done to this violin by our luthier to make this violin a much better violin than it was when we received it. In particular the neck angle had to be reset. Now that and all of the other hardware are set correctly for ease of play and for producing the best sound that a Wolff Bros violin can make. As you can see the violin has been well taken care of and there are very few marks or scratches and definitely no cracks. The hardware such as the chin rest, tail hanger and pegs are of very good quality like the Obligato strings. The only way left to increase the value of this violin is to upgrade the hardware even more and that means spending hundreds or thousands of dollars for very expensive strings, pegs, chin rests, etc.. The result would be magnificent to view but would be a very personal choice and so we will leave that to the purchaser. We could have the violin customized if a buyer requests on a cost added basis.
